Adrian Plays Irish Corporal Patrick O'Brien:

A native of Belfast Ireland, Corporal O’Brien is a big, well-muscled man in his early twenties. Though all members of A.R.E.S. are trained in maintaining and repairing the Tripods and other war mecha, mechanics is Patrick’s specialty. As the Chief Engineer for the Goliath, there is little Corporal O’Brien can’t repair, whether it’s replacing a pivot bracing for one of the metal giant’s knee joints or field stripping Goliath’s 6” gun. His Battle Station on the Goliath is primarily on the war machine’s lower deck in the Engine Room keeping the giant Morrison Steam Drive Engines on line.

Quick witted and good-natured, Patrick is the epitome of the extroverted, silver-tongued devil. Men like and respect him, he’s quick with a joke and a man to have at your back in a fight. Many women find him to be hard to resist and even harder to hang onto. In short, he’s a charming rogue. Lt. Carter is not immune to the big Irishmen’s charisma, but keeps him mostly at arm’s length. Patrick finds this to be a challenge at first, but his casual interest soon grows into something deeper as he comes to know and respect his lovely squad mate’s formidable abilities. He is not blind to his Captain’s interest in Jennifer as well, and a growing rivalry develops between the two men.

This rivalry is fed by something deeper, because Patrick’s past holds a dark secret. A secret that carries with it the potential to destroy Goliath Squad and severely damage A.R.E.S.

Raised a poor Roman Catholic in the Belfast ghettos, Patrick was raised under the injustices of an Ireland under the iron rule of the British Crown. He experienced first hand the Rebellion of 1900, when the Irish revolted after the Martian Invasion and temporarily threw off the British yoke. He also experienced the crushing of the Rebellion by the British Army and the subsequent death of his parents.

Despite his secret allegiance and agenda, Patrick finds himself increasingly bonded to his international mates in Goliath Squad. Even his antipathy toward his English Captain is undermined by Eric’s innate courage and decency. Ultimately Patrick’s mixed loyalties will be severely tested in the crucible of battle and he will be forced to choose between his native country and his new comrades.
